Texas Panhandle finally drives out Planned Parenthood

By Charlie Butts

Planned Parenthood has been shut down in the Texas panhandle.

American Life League’s (ALL) Stop Planned Parenthood, or Stopp International, says it took a long time, but their campaign against Planned Parenthood finally got some results. “For 12 years in the Texas panhandle, there has been a fight against Planned Parenthood,” he notes. “Planned Parenthood, in 1997, operated 19 clinics in the Texas panhandle.”

Then the state reduced funding for the organization, and pro-life workers also continued in their efforts to shut Planned Parenthood’s doors. “And as of December 31, there will no Jim Sedlak 1longer be any Planned Parenthood offices in the Texas panhandle,” Sedlak explains. “They will all be gone.”

The two remaining clinics in Amarillo have disaffiliated with the national organization. Sedlak says other cities can accomplish the same goal if they are determined, and information on that is available on the Stopp website.

Hong Kong Cardinal to work for religious freedom in China

By Asia News

Cardinal Zen. AsiaNews.it photo.

Hong Kong (AsiaNews) – The bishop of Hong Kong, Card Joseph Zen, will retire in mid-2009 to become involved on China Church matters full time. “I need to provide information on the Church in China to the Pope, and I need time to study on it,” he told some journalists.

Cardinal Zen will be 77 next 13 January. He had already made a request to quit as Hong Kong bishop when he was 75.

The prelate said the precise date for his retirement will be announced by the Vatican, adding that when he submitted his request for the third time, Benedict XVI told him that it would be officially announced “soon”.

Born in Shanghai, Cardinal Zen has direct knowledge as a priest of the Chinese Church from years of teaching in Chinese seminaries

After he became bishop he was able to visit the country only once because of his strong criticism of Beijing’s religious policies and his defence of democracy in Hong Kong.

In announcing his retirement he stressed that he would not become involved in the process of normalising Sino-Vatican relations which are a “diplomatic affair”. Instead he would focus on freedom of religion for China’s Church.

Bangladeshi Buddhists drive Christian from his home

By Compass Direct

DHAKA, Bangladesh, December 26 (Compass Direct News) – Buddhist villagers in southeastern Bangladesh’s Rangamati district last week beat a young father and drove him from his house for converting to Christianity.

The Buddhists in Asambosti, in the Tabalchari area some 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Dhaka, warned Sujan Chakma, 27, not to return to his home after beating him on Dec. 18. Chakma, who converted to Christianity about four months ago, has come back to his home but some nights the likelihood of attacks forces him to remain outside.

He is often unable to provide for his 26-year-old wife, Shefali Chakma, and their 6-year-old son, as area residents opposed to his faith refuse to give him work as a day laborer. Chakma, his wife and son do not eat on days he does not work, he said.

“I am ostracized by my neighbors since I became Christian,” Chakma said. “They put pressure on me to give up my faith, saying otherwise I cannot live in this society. Nothing daunted me, I held firm to my faith in Jesus. On Dec. 18, four of my neighbors came to my home and beat me. They slapped and punched on me. Later they forced me to leave my house. They threatened me that if I come back to my home, I will be in great trouble.”

Neighbors have threatened to beat him again and to send him to jail, he said, and they have pressured him to divorce his wife.

Brits set to deport Iranian Christian converts; likely to be persecuted back in Iran

By Sally Henfield

A FAMILY of Christian asylum seekers from Darwen are due to be deported to Iran this week.

Forouzan Rajabi, 47, and her 22-year-old daughter Sahar have been held in a detention centre at Manchester Airport since last Friday where they were seperated from the 25-year-old son, Reza.

Members of the Iranian community in Blackburn and other areas of the country have expressed their support for the family.

Supporters insist that the Rajabi family fled Iran because of issues to do with democracy and freedom and think if they are deported back their human rights and safety will be at risk.

Friends belive they will be pressured to convert back to Islam if they are forced back to their native country.

The family regularly attend Grace Community Church in Wensley Road, Blackburn, where they help translate at the Iranian bible group sessions.

Their solicitor sent a letter to the European Court of Human Rights immediately after the incident.

20-thousand Pakistani troops move to Indian border

By Zahid Hussain

Pakistan moved thousands of troops away from its border with Afghanistan towards its Indian frontier yesterday, marking a big increase in tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours after the Mumbai terror attacks.

The move of 20,000 troops – the army’s 14th Division was being redeployed to Kasur and Sialkot, close to the Indian border – struck a blow against attempts to thwart al-Qaeda and Taleban extremists along the Afghan border. All troop leave has also been cancelled.

Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, met the chiefs of his army, navy and air force to discuss “the prevailing security situation,” according to an official statement.

India blames Pakistan-based militants for the attacks last month on Mumbai. Both countries rushed troops to the Kashmir region after the attacks but tensions cooled after intensive international diplomacy.

Vatican endorses iTunes Prayer Book

By AP

VATICAN CITY (AP) – The Vatican is endorsing new technology that brings the book of daily prayers used by priests straight onto iPhones.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Social Communications is embracing the iBreviary, an iTunes application created by a technologically savvy Italian priest, the Rev. Paolo Padrini, and an Italian Web designer.

The application includes the Breviary prayer book—in Italian, English, Spanish, French and Latin and, in the near future, Portuguese and German. Another section includes the prayers of the daily Mass, and a third contains various other prayers.

After a free trial period in which the iBreviary was downloaded approximately 10,000 times in Italy, an official version was released earlier this month, Padrini said.

Iraqi Christians urged to return home

By WND

Nearly 500,000 Christians who fled Iraq because of attacks by al-Qaida or other Islamic fundamentalists now are being encouraged to return by a Christian organization seeking financial support from the Iraqi government to rebuild homes and lives.

Ken Joseph Jr. of the Assyrian Christians said the multinational military force that ejected Saddam Hussein from power and has worked to establish a stable government has succeeded.

Now he’s working to help Christians chased by the violence to return, since they are, in fact, the first people of Iraq, he said.

Joseph said he’s held meetings with government officials and learned that if he can assemble information including names, Iraqi social security numbers and hometowns for Christians who fled, they could be placed on the Iraqi ration program and get monthly support from the government, even while in another country.

‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ refutes the left’s world view

By Don Feder

A friend told me: “Show me a list of a person’s favorite movies and I’ll tell you what he believes – including his politics.” Another said he could pretty much tell how someone felt about America by his reaction to John Wayne movies.

I’m inclined to think that cinema shapes reality far more than reflects it. But the type of movies we are drawn to reveals our worldview – provides a map of our inner selves.

The left adores films that are anti-American, anti-faith, politically correct, paranoid, cynical and nihilistic. In the past few years, the critics have salivated over trash like, “No Country for Old Men,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Million Dollar Baby,” “The Departed,” “Atonement,” and – most recently – “Batman: the Dark Knight.”

Movies that reflect middle-class norms and Judeo-Christian values are derided as dull, clichéd, unrealistic, simplistic and saccharine,

An over-the-top example of the left’s disdain for normalcy is the piece by City Editor Wendell Jamieson in the December 19 New York Times (“Wonderful? Sorry, George, It’s a Pitiful, Dreadful Life”) in which the writer takes a sledge hammer, a chainsaw and a flame-thrower to “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

The Capra classic is #11 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 best American movies – just behind “Singin’ in the Rain” and ahead of “Sunset Boulevard.” It was Frank Capra’s favorite film and Jimmy Stewart’s favorite role.

Movie maven Roger Ebert observes: “What is remarkable about ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ is how well it holds up over the years. It’s one of those ageless movies, like ‘Casablanca’ or ‘The Third Man’ that improves with age. Some movies, even good ones, should be seen only once. When we know how they turn out, they’ve surrendered their mystery and appeal. Other movies can be viewed an indefinite number of times. Like great music, they improve with familiarity. ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ falls in the second category.”

Until exclusive broadcast rights were acquired by NBC in 1994, it was shown dozens of times during the holiday season each year. As a Christmas movie (that wasn’t intended to be a Christmas movie), it was more popular than “Miracle on 34th Street and “A Christmas Carol.”

Generations of fans have been charmed and inspired by its gentle humor, pathos, humanity and life-affirming story.

7 reasons to reject Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series

Editor’s Note:  There is a profound need among Christian families to use wisdom in what to allow into the home.  Berit Kjos’ article is included here because it does an excellent job of explaining the dangers of these supposedly ‘different’ vampire stories.

By Berit Kjos

“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?’ And the woman said to the serpent, ‘… God has said, ‘You shall not eat it [the fruit of the tree], nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’
“Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die…. So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.” Gen. 3:1-6

The forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest: “Edward is nothing like any boy [Bella has] ever met…. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance — unorthodox because Edward really isn’t like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn’t aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he’s immortal…. But he doesn’t have fangs…. And he doesn’t drink human blood, though Edward and his family are unique among vampires in that lifestyle choice.”[1]

The author receives the message: “Bella and Edward were, quite literally, voices in my head. They simply wouldn’t shut up. I’d stay up as late as I could stand trying to get all the stuff in my mind typed out. …it’s been a true labor of love, love for Edward and Bella and all the rest of my imaginary friends…”[2]

Wall Street Journal: “‘Twilight’ has targeted the collective soul of teenage America, and will surely have its way.”[3]

Email from concerned parents: “I have seen lots of Christian girls reading this and other books by Stephanie Myers. They are so evil!  My daughter tells me that most of the girls at the Christian school are reading them.” Another parent wrote, ”All the girls at school are reading those books. Yes, it is a Christian school.

If my goal was to undermine Christianity, incite rebellion against parents, eradicate Biblical values, and spread moral chaos, I would urge teens to read theTwilight series. I would prompt them to immerse their minds and emotions in the dark, emotional whirlpool of sensual occultism. And I wouldn’t warn them of the consequences.

Of course, my real goal is the opposite: to expose this assault on Biblical faith and to equip potential readers with information that enables them to resist the temptation to join the collective journey into the mind-changing realm of the occult. The following points show the raging spiritual war that’s sure to intensify in the years ahead.

1. VAMPIRES & WEREWOLVES are rooted in pagan cultures around the world. The various historical expressions of these mythical creature were dreaded, blood-thirsty manifestations of evil spirits. Linked to darkness, they were viewed as supernatural creatures of the night. Today’s more familiar forms were shaped through folklore, fairy tales, and memorable villains such as Count Dracula. Both were re-imagined in more humanized forms through the Harry Potter books and Anne Rice’s popular Vampire Chronicles.

But they’re not benign. Bella’s passionate love for the mysteriously handsome Edward may be fiction, but the obsession felt by teenage readers who “resonate” with Bella is very real! Young super-fans (Twilighters) identify with her plight, sense her fears, and “feel” her passion. They love the storybecause it arouses strong, unforgettable emotions — the kind of enchanting thrills that can best be shared within the peer group, not with parents.

In the process, they also learn to crave the mystical, paranormal stimuli that belong in the forbidden realm God calls evil. Knowing well our human inclinations, He warns us to shun all forms of real or imagined occultism:

“…have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.” Ephesians 5:11-12

“For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has the temple of God with idols?… Therefore ‘Come out from among them and be separate,’ says the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-17

2. Fantasy and imagination can transform beliefs and values more quickly than reality. Many of our readers defend their love for occult entertainment with this standard justification: “I know the difference between reality and fantasy.” But it doesn’t matter! Know it or not, persuasive fiction and virtual experience can change minds and plant lasting memories more effectively than actual experience!

Popular fantasies, with their boundless thrills and unforgettable images, bypass logical thinking. Their subtle suggestions face little conscious resistance.Designed to stir feelings and produce strong emotional responses, they create new realities in today’s “open” minds!  As Harvard Professor Chris Dede, a global leader in the development of education technology programs, wrote, “Sensory immersion helps learners grasp reality through illusion.”[4]

But what kind of “reality” will “learners” find through illusion? And how do those illusions shape their lives? These Scriptures give us a clue:

“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:6

“…they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagination of their evil heart…” Jeremiah 11:8

“Jesus said, ‘You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28

“Do not be deceived. …he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” Galatians 6:7-8

3. God tells us to “abhor what is evil” and “cling to what is good.” (Romans 12:9) When today’s youth love the emotional thrills of popular occultism, they are desensitizing their hearts and minds to its evil. They are turning God’s truth upside down. And they — with a little help from the marketing industry — are already turning America’s values upside down. It all fits the plans of our globalist leaders and that old serpent in Genesis.

“You can only have a new society,” wrote Marilyn Ferguson in The Aquarian Conspiracy, ”if you change the education of the younger generation.”[5]  That process demands that people reject God’s wise boundaries and “abhor” what He calls good. That change is well under way![6]

“You love evil more than good….” Psalm 52:3

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness…. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!” Isaiah 5:20-21
